“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am then I can change”
– Carl Rogers
Grow through what you go through
Life can throw us a lot of challenges at times but we can grow through it rather than just go through it and the journey can be fulfilling despite facing adversity. Sometimes it may feel quite lonely but we are inextricably linked to the web of life enfolded in a network of relationships and these relationships can bring meaning and shape who we are. The most important relationship we have, however, is with ourselves and this is something that can be outside of our awareness and often overlooked.
So how can you develop a better relationship with yourself?
As a trauma informed person-centred therapeutic counsellor in Hull and East Yorkshire I work with adults in a way that is intuitive, relational and collaborative guiding you towards your authentic self helping you to gain insight and perspective. I am client led and we will work together at your own pace with the emphasis being on the relationship as this is the foundation for working effectively and feeling assured that you’re able to engage in the therapeutic process.
This approach promotes healing and progress as it is rooted in the belief that we are all relational and the interconnectedness we have with others, along with empathy and attunement, determines our well-being. To be truly seen, heard and understood is transformational and empowering and when someone accepts you for who you are then you can accept yourself. We are all worthy of connection and when your worth is reflected back at you you too shall see this.
About me
I have always been interested in trying to see things from the other person’s perspective and to approach life in a holistic and mindful way so when I came across the Person-Centred model of counselling I knew this was how I wanted to work as it aligned with my values and outlook. I’m very passionate about being a relational therapist as relationships and connection is fundamental to growth and healing.
I have faced challenging periods in life resulting in often feeling misunderstood and isolated in my experiences and it wasn’t until I went for counselling that I finally had someone who ‘got me’. Inspired by the power of talking therapy I started training to be a counsellor during which time I had a horse riding accident that left me with life changing head injuries including a brain injury. My life would never be the same again and I struggled to accept the enormity of living with a disability and the changed version of myself. I was grieving the old me and the loss of the person I was before.
Working through my difficulties enabled me to realise I still had something to give to the world and helping others was what brought meaning and I continued to follow my path of becoming a therapeutic counsellor. I feel that through my own experiences I am able to better understand others who may be going through something similar as I can empathise and relate on a deeper level.
I have always been passionate about the outdoors and the healing powers of the natural world and I’m lucky to live in a semi-rural town by the sea and spending time outside is where I feel at home. We have such beautiful landscapes and wildlife that I enjoy immersing myself in and it has helped me on my own journey of recovery and listening to and watching the birds is one of my favourite things to do. Being mindful in nature has brought huge benefits to my life and has given me a whole new way of looking at and engaging with the world.
